Shakaland, Zebra, & Midterms

February 16, 2009

Yesterday we had the unique opportunity of learning about Zulu Culture. We went to Shakaland which is a three hour car ride away. Shakaland was built as a movie set for the movie Shaka Zulu. Shaka was a ruthless Zulu king, he did many things for the Zulu people including developing a new fighting technique. I have included many pictures so you can get an idea of this culture. There are a couple interesting facts about the Zulu culture, polygamy is allowed. When entering buildings men are to go first so they can protect the women and the men sit on the right and the women on the left because it is easier for the men to protect the women from the left side.

The other night me, Katie, and Jeff went into the game reserve next to the campus. We took a really good trail that has bridges and ponds; it was so beautiful to see it at night. On the trail Jeff led the way, Katie was in the middle, and I was in the back. I was kind of hesitant about going in the reserve at night, but we did anyway. Jeff kept sacrificing himself because he was continually running into spider webs, Katie kept stepping on snails, and I was doing what I do best, which is getting scared at every corner. It was amazing we walked past this field and Katie noticed four Zebra less than 10 feet away from us. It was incredible. Unfortunately my headlamp is so bright and my scream was so loud that I scared them off. Luckily we were able to see some more in the reserve before we left that evening.

We have already reached midterm time for our intensive courses. I am looking forward to the ministry month. I just took my Theology midterm today, which was easy because it was online and open book. I am looking forward to my excursion with my Human Growth class this weekend. I will tell you about it in a future post! Hope all is well!

Ode to Katie

I met Katie Owens on the 17-hour plane fight to South Africa. The night before we had a red-eye flight from LAX to JFK. I was unable to sleep the entire flight. When I got on the flight to SA me and Katie had a little introduction time and were observing the different entertainment options that were available to us on the longest flight ever! The last thing I remember I was playing with the overhead light with my remote and fell asleep, keep in mind this is probably mid conversation and the overhead light is on. This is where Katie comes in, she was extremely caring and took care of me during this vulnerable time. She turned off the light above me, helped fix my bobbing head by placing my head on my pillow. This was the beginning of this great friendship.

Me and Katie at Shakaland
Since the time on the plane we have had many adventures, we have gone on walks in the animal reserve where we were 10 feet away from 4 Zebra, accidentally matching at the Birds of Prey sanctuary. In a previous blog I told you that there was a picture that was of me and Lauren at the Birds of Prey sanctuary, it was not of me and Lauren, it was of me and Katie. Katie is an awesome friend and I needed to clear up this mistake to the world in a proper way.

This is the infamous picture of me and Katie!
